Adli Bishay is an internationally recognized specialist in environment and sustainable development. After receiving his Ph D., and D. Sc., from Sheffield University, England, he joined the American University in Cairo(AUC) where he became Chairman of its Physical Sciences Department from 1962-1973. He later initiated its Materials Engineering Department and Solid State Science Program. In 1979 he founded the AUC Desert Development Center (DDC) and was its director from 1979-1993.He also chaired the International Desert Development Commission (1987-1996). In 1990, he was responsible for the coordination of a task force of top national consultants charged by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) with proposing strategies for sustainable development in Egypt. In 1993, he founded "Friends of Environment and Development Association (FEDA)", a Non- Governmental Organization (NGO) whose major goal is the implementation of the recommendations of the UNDP sponsored “Strategies for Sustainable Development in Egypt” with special reference to fragile ecosystems (Desert, Coastal Areas, and Historical Areas).Since 1999, FEDA concentrated its activities on Historic Cairo (Gamalia district).
